Health Insurance Benefits
Most insurances provide some coverage for Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT), which means that you may be able to use your health insurance to cover some nutrition visits!
In Network
Currently, I am in-network with the following health insurance plans:
AETNA
Cigna
EMBLEM HEALTH GHI & HIP
HEALTHFIRST
BLUE CROSS BLUE ShieLD (Horizon & EMPIRE)
METROPLUS
UNITED HEALTHCARE EMPIRE (NYSHIP)
Out of Network
I am out-of-network with: Medicare, United Healthcare Commercial and Oscar. However, you may still be able to use your insurance for nutrition visits if you have out-of-network benefits.
Check below on how to verify your out-of-network benefits for nutrition counseling
Verifying Your Insurance Benefits
Let’s make this process easy so that you know exactly what your insurance will cover!
Before scheduling an appointment, call your health insurance company and say that you would like to verify your benefits. Then ask them the following questions:
Do they cover nutrition counseling, for CPT Codes 97802, 97803 and 99404?
If they ask for a diagnosis code, use code Z71.3 - which is for preventative nutrition.
Ask how many visits are covered per calendar year, and whether or not you have a copay.
Ask if you need a referral from your PCP. Note: Clients with Aetna, Metroplus and Healthfirst and/or any medical concerns are recommended to get a referral to ensure insurance coverage of visits.
Note this information on your registration form and in your appointment request. This way you know exactly how many visits you have through your health insurance.
If I am out of network with your insurance, you may still be able to use your health insurance for the visit! Just ask your health insurance company if you have “out of network” benefits for the above CPT codes (97802 & 97803) and diagnosis code Z71.3 (for plans other than Aetna and UHC). For Aetna and UHC, just ask for medical nutrition therapy coverage for the CPT codes above - including number of visits.
Using your HSA Account
If your health insurance plan is not listed above, or you have a high deductible that must be met prior to insurance covering any services, or you do not wish to use your health insurance, you can use your HSA account to pay for nutrition visits!
That means using pre-tax dollars for an investment in your health…what could be worth more?!
My out-of-pocket rates are also very reasonable and listed here.
